Congressman sorry for likening Obama to Hitler

We read:
"Republican Paul Broun is sorry for calling President-elect Barack Obama a 'Marxist' and comparing him to Adolf Hitler, the Georgia Congressman said Tuesday. "I regret putting it that way," he told WGAC radio in Augusta, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "I apologize to anyone who has taken offense at that."

Maybe my eyes and ears are blocked or something but I have yet to see or hear a Leftist apologize for calling Bush a Nazi

Right on target Jon, but it obviously doesn't matter any more. Anyone who dares treat Obama the same way Bush was treated will be branded a racist. And that's just for openers!

Check out the comments for the source article. They scream out one point over, and over, and over again: Ignorance! Everyone knows that the Nazis were bad, but almost no one knows the first thing about who they were, what they believed or the history of their rise to power. Even worse, they don't know that they don't know.

That scares me more than the fact that Obama is proposing many—but not all—of the exact same things which Hitler did.

Hitler was also viewed by many as a saviour, wasn't he.

Before we apply a label of hypocrisy to this situation, is there a quote somewhere of Bush being called a Nazi by a member of CONGRESS?

Obama is worse than Hitler.
He has the charisma and organisational ideas of Hitler, the racist ideology of Mugabe, the economic and social ideas of Stalin.

The worst combination possible of 3 of the 5 worst dictators from the last century, and I think if you look a bit deeper you'll find pieces of Mao and Pol Pot as well, in fact the Black Panthers and ACORN look a lot like they'd fit right in with Mao's "student" organisations that organised the slaughter during the "cultural revolution", though parallels with the SA and SD are also possible.

For years, GWB has been called a Nazi (and worse) by members of the far-Left. Does their occupation matter?

In many ways he actually was. When he came to power Germany's economy was in the toilet. Unemployment was sky high and inflation was so bad that you needed a wheelbarrow full of Marks to buy a loaf of bread. He did two things which turned the economy around.

First, he put people to work on national projects such as the Autobahn. (He was initially opposed to the Autobahn, then got behind it 100% when he realized the impact it would have.) He also put people to work building armaments and an army. This reduced unemployment.

Second, he encouraged national pride in the Germans, almost exactly as Obama does with his "Yes we can!" slogan. He got them fired up about their ability to do great things, and the German people took that motivation and put themselves to work. He encouraged people to get involved with each other, get physical exercise and join volunteer groups.

Believe it or not, Hitler was a masterful speaker. We're used to seeing just short clips of his speeches when he has reached his crescendo where he looks the most nuts, speaking in a language we don't understand plus the benefit of 20/20 hindsight.

In fact, his speeches started out very low key, to the point where he didn't even speak until he felt everyone was ready to listen. Then he would start out speaking low and slow, gradually building up to a flurry of excitement which just carried everyone along.

The content of his speeches were not overtly evil. Whenever I've encountered translations of parts of his speeches, I've noticed that he tended to focus on "we can overcome our problems" type of statements. He might describe a problem in some detail, sometimes describe the source of the problem (often the Treaty of Versailles, which really was unjust in many ways), then encouraged the people to step up and overcome them by pulling together. When you understand what he actually said, it's easy to see why so many people were fooled.

He was the driving force behind the development of the Volkswagen Beetle, including personally selecting the site for the factory. He was also praised for getting the trains to run on time.

If he had simply stopped there, or continued on in the same vein, he would have been one of Germany's greatest leaders. As it was, these things were merely cover for the horrors he was planning to unleash on the world.

In other words, he had a great facade as the savior of Germany, but it hid one of the darkest hearts of history.

This congressman represents the reason Republicans are no longer in power. UTTER WEAKNESS!! I've never heard anyone on the left apologize for the names they've called Bush, and all concervatives! The only way to beat the Left is to use their tactics!

Not only well-said Ed, but also factual. Now do you know why people compare him with Obama? BTW, it was Mussolini (sp) who got the trains to run on time, in Italy.

Yes, as a matter of fact it does.

Upon initial search, I found that Senator Robert Byrd did, in fact, equate Bush with Hitler:

Octogenarian Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia made the equation in the context of Bush's attack on Senate procedures which might slow or halt his on-going attempt to pack the courts with extreme right-wing fanatics. Byrd said Bush's moves to destroy time-honored Senate rules parallel Hitler's ramming fascist legislation through his gutted Reichstag. "Hitler never abandoned the cloak of legality," said Byrd. "He recognized the enormous psychological value of having the law on his side. Instead, he turned the law inside out and made illegality legal."
