New York Post Cartoon: Is this 'Racially Offensive'?

"There's a political cartoon in today's New York Post that some social activists are questioning this morning. The Sean Delonas drawing morphs together two stories in the news this week -- the Obama administration's economic stimulus bill and the pet chimp that police shot to stop his attack on a Connecticut woman.

The cartoon, which shows police shooting a monkey, seems to imply that a monkey (who some are interpreting as President Obama) wrote the stimulus bill.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "racially offensive"

Personally, I feel that the "stimulus" bill might as well have been written by a chimp. There's not much in it that actually stimulates.

Update:

One of the commenters on this post made a comment I should have made: The Left called GWB a chimp more times than you could number. So if that was OK, why is just one indirect hint that Obaby might be a chimp out of bounds? Once again the Left can dish out massive abuse but believe they should not get any abuse back. They do clearly think that they are superior beings. Pumped-up ego is their hallmark. No wonder they don't like followers of the teacher who said: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth"

Personally, I think that Travis (the chimp from Stamford, CT) would have done a better job if he had written the bill.

The thing that makes no sense is people assuming that the chimp is President Obama -- because Obama didn't write the stimulus bill. He let Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi lead that. So the premise of their problem with it is faulty.

So it's okay to depict GW Bush as a chimp or monkey but not Obama?

Oh that's right! Bush is white. White people can be racially offended/discriminated by others according to Liberals.

This cartoon is definately offensive....to chimps worldwide.

It is not offensive. It is just stupid. The author needs some guidance on what is humorous and effective.

Well, if Obama had actually crafted this bill, then the Reverand Al might have a case.
However, Obama delegated it - not to economists, but to Pelosi and Reed. If those two don't represent a lower Simian order, then I don't know what does.

This cartoon is highly offensive to Chimps everywhere! There's no way a chimp could have written such a bad bill, even on a bad day!

Does Al not remember the old adage that if you place a bunch of monkeys in front of typewriters, they will eventually recreate the works of Shakespeare?

It might take many years for that to happen, but in the meantime they would create a stimulus bill

Like anonymous #5 said, Obama didn't write the stimulus bill. People like Sharpton are just seeing what they want to see so they can still feel relevant. Bush, however, was portrayed as a chomp or ape more timesthan I can remember. Why is that not racist??

Now, I asks, ya, I asks, who the f*** cares what Al Sharpton says?

Anonymous said...

And this is ok?

When one enters politics, he forever and always relinquishes his right to take umbrage at parody, however tastless and humorless. Can't take it? Then stay home.

Didn't we just get chastised by our Attorney General for being a nation of cowards with regards to talking about race...

Thank you Rev. Al for demonstrating why it is that people are afraid of talking about it...

Actually, I just felt a tingle of stimulatiion run up my leg when I heard the president speaking on the radio.

Ive seen it said that there's a better than even chance that when Bill Clinton hears the term "stimulus" he thinks of something different from the rest of us.

Perhaps the Rev or maybe the ACLU can put out a list of things that you can use in analogy with whites but not blacks? It might be something like this:
1) Apes of any variety
2) Nooses
3) Nazis
4) Niggardly
5) Woodpiles
6) Watermelon
can anyone else help with this?

So would it be racist to have a picutre showing a bunch of monkeys writing a shakespeare sonnet?

How about the three monkeys: see, hear, do no evil?

Is it racist to keep monkeys in a zoo? We know it is bad to keep one at home.

Are central america, south america and africa racist because there are so many "free range" monkeys in the forest?

Things to think about...

Wait, are they actually criticizing the NY Times? I thought NYT was their gospel outlet. How could the Times do this to the Liberals? And how can the the Liberals turn on their beloved Liberla Media, I thought they had their own rules to live by.

The NY Slimes is being critized for not being Leftist enough, not for the bunch that's in power now. As for this cartoon, personally, i don't find it funny. It was obviously an attempt to make a worthy political statement, while using the current headline about that poor chimp and the woman he injured, behavior most likely caused by the heavy drugs he was given by the cretin who owned him.

Funny? Not at all, but not racist either. Then again, to race-pimps like Al $harptongue, everything is racist if it gets him on TV and puts more $$$ in his pockets.

BTW Peter, it was a Chimp, not a Gorilla. Actually, Gorilla's are more peaceful and far less aggressive than Chimps are. Also, Chimps can be (and often are) carnivorous, while Gorilla's are strictly herbivores.

Folks, it was the New York Post, not the New York Times
