Alleged Christian criticizes the Bible

We read:
"A spokesman for the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado on Wednesday condemned remarks made Monday by state Sen. Scott Renfroe when he called homosexuality an "abomination" and an "offense to God" in a debate over a bill to extend health benefits to same-sex partners of state employees.

"As a Christian, I am profoundly saddened by the hate speech uttered by Sen. Renfroe in the name of God," the Rev. Richard Craft, interim pastor at Family of Christ Presbyterian Church of Greeley, said in a statement.

Since the Bible makes clear that homosexuality is an "abomination" and an "offense to God" (See for instance Romans chapter 1) this guy is a strange Christian. That he is a spokesman for the Interfaith Alliance sounds pretty wishy-washy so I suppose a weak attachment to the Bible has to be expected of him. Why do these people pretend to be Christians while at the same time rejecting the teachings of Christianity? He probably thinks the Bible is a book of old fairy stories too. He needs to find another job.

I agree with you.

Well the Espiscopal Church in Colorado just got a practicing Buddhist as a bishop, so, there are many strange Christians in that state.

And the fact remains that Christianity (and most other mainstream religions) is very anti-homosexual. Cold? Harsh? Yes. Truthful? Honest? Yes. Call it hate speech if you want, but it's fact.

The real problem here is that we have a prevailing politically correct mindset that is now dictates new laws and legislation favoring a minority while completely disregarding the majority. Look at Prop 8. Look at other states that reject Gay marriage. It's clear that the majority still believes that homosexuality is not "normal".

It's truly pathetic that someone NOW is offended by something that has been around for almost 2000 years Christianity, like it or not, is so foundational to Western society: laws, ethics, beliefs, morality, commerce, etc. So much as been rooted in Judeo-Christian values. But the PC a**holes aren't willing to accept that. They are more concerned with historical revisionism. You know, re-write the history books, and it never happened.

Just tell me how a Christian can reject the Bible as truth?

How Christian of you to say something nice like that. I am sure that Jesus, the liberal, would approve..

Whatever, it's the bible, I've seen liberal Christians use it to justify their stances on gun control, global warming, wealth redistribution, etc.

For example, I love the death penalty and so does the bible. Yet the libs love to quote "thou shall not kill" because to them it means "thou shall not murder."

Google "hallelujah diet" and you'll find some nutty christian vegetarian group that thinks you should eat like Adam and Eve.

So the state senator can use the bible if he wants, but I think he's wasting his time. He's preaching to the choir, his choir. You can't convince me of anything using the bible.

The Bible is a buffet of words and phrases - and you can pick and choose whatever suits your taste, and justify your personal taste accordingly.

For 7:27, Jesus the liberal may not have approved of the way it was said but the premise is still correct. Jesus would accept anyone into his flock but if you are a sinner you must repent of your sins. That's the whole point. Yeah, I know, a lot of hypocrites out there. But that still doesn't make homosexuality right.

God made homosexuals the way they are. Are you criticizing His handiwork?

"But that still doesn't make homosexuality right."

---One man's sin is another man's virtue.

Biblical arguments are worthless outside of church. Why should I care for your interpretation? Why should you care for mine? Our minds are made up.

Unless the state has an official religion with a religious police, religious arguments become irrelevant.

The senator can say anything he wants, but his religious-based argument is of little value to the millions that believe differently.

3:41 AM - I can respect your religion and still disagree with it.

The bible clearly notes that God di NOT make homosexuals the "way they are" and therefore they are not his handiwork. What it does say is that because of their sin he has turned them over to their unnatural desires.

Oh, and before you quote the standard BS about how brain scans show that homosexuals are genuinely different don't forget that additional research has shown those differences to be a result of the behaviour and not a cause.

1:21 -said, "The bible clearly notes that God di NOT make homosexuals the "way they are" and therefore they are not his handiwork."

God created everything, whether you like it or not. He even created your delusions. He told me so.

There's one thing you can say about the Bible - it isn't clear about anything and often appears contradictory - which makes it easy to interpret as you please.

The bible clearly notes that God di NOT make homosexuals the "way they are".....

----And yet...

“When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.” (1 Samuel 18:1-4)

“You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen [David] the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established.” (1 Samuel 20:30)

“David rose from beside the stone heap and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He bowed three times and they kissed each other and wept with each other; David wept the more. Then Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, since both of us have sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, “The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.” ’ He got up and left; and Jonathan went into the city.” (1 Samuel 20:41-42)

“Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
How the mighty have fallen in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies slain upon your high places. I am distressed for you my brother Jonathan; Greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.”
(2 Samuel 1:23, 26-27, emphasis added)

It's all interpretation, it's all debatable, but to some people this sounds very gay.

The David and Jonathan issue is clearly explained here:

Just as I said - the Bible is as ever unclear, and people will interpret the texts according to their own prejudices.

The Bible is not about clarity, it's about faith. Place your faith in Jesus Christ, and you will understand what I mean.

"The David and Jonathan issue is clearly explained here:"

---I read the explanation, fine, gun control advocates can also find explanations in the bible, anti-death penalty people can also find explanations. Take any issue, drinking, gambling, doing drugs, poligamy, divorce and you'll find biblical verses for it and against it.

So my point remains, the bible is debatable, even among the most virtuous religious scholars there's vigorous debate.

And that's why what the senator said doesn't offend me, because it's his opinion, and opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one.

What is your motive for faith without clarity? - a sublimation of insecurity? - the need for certainty? - the need for significance and recognition? - the fear of death and oblivion? - however nebulous the "faith" you cling to?

Whatever one's opinion on homosexuality, the Bible does provide an explanation for why so many people reflexively find sexual acts between two men or two women disgusting, revolting, and nauseous. Clearly such people are never going to give moral approval to such acts, no matter what special privileges the sodomite faction might get legislatures to pass, or activist judges to make up.

Robert, what you find revolting, millions embrace it.

Ask the founder of Girls Gone Wild, he became a millionaire peddling that stuff.

You can't even put on a straight porn anymore with at least one woman on woman act.

If there's such revulsion, how come "I kissed a girl and I liked it" became a top 40 song for such a long time?

If Brokeback Mountain had been about cowgirls, it wouldn't have sold $80 million dollars, it would have sold $800 million.

Besides, you think most people care about the bible? Bullshit. Most people only care about pleasing themselves, they want to get tatoos (sin), wear earings (sin for men), curse (sin), get divorced (sin), gamble in vegas (sin), abort (sin), etc.

Don't believe me? Read this article, here's a quote.

"AshleyMadison.com calls itself a “dating site specifically designed to help married people cheat on their spouses.” Its slogan is “Life’s short, have an affair.” Its previous tag line was “When Monogamy Becomes Monotony.” It boasts 3.5 million registered users, among whom some 400,000 active members each pay up to $249 quarterly."

The Bible has social restrictions and punishments for societies that lived thousands of years ago in the middle-east. It should have little or no relevance today except as social history.
We should be capable of producing our own legislation and mores based on reason and common sense.
