Israeli official: Swine flu name offensive
We read:
"The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday. Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel.
Scientists are unsure where the new swine flu virus originally emerged, though it was identifed first in the United States. They say there is nothing about the virus that makes it "Mexican" and worry such a label would be stigmatizing.

So you can't call it "swine" flu because that offends Jews and Muslims and you can't call it Mexican flu because that stigmatizes Mexicans. So what on earth can you call it? I know: "Christian flu". You can be as offensive as you like about Christians.

So now the always-sensitive jews (when it's in their best interest anyway) are worried about the sensitivities of Muslims? Is this the bizarro world Jerry Sienfeld told us about?
But he does have a point. We all know it started in Mexico, even those who refuse to admit it. So why not the Mexican flu? Then again, since there are more Mexicans in the US than there are in Mexico, why not the US flu?
You just had to know that somehow, in some way, in the end, it would be the US's fault.

From what I have read the virus originated in Swine and mutated to the point where it could make the jump over to humans. Thus if a Muslim catches swine flu he will be denied his trip to paradise and his virgins even if he martyrs himself. That sounds like a win win situation to me!
God created swine, and then made sure that they made it on the Ark. There is simply an Old Testament prohibition against eating anything with a cloven hoof that does not chew cud.
Is a camel offensive? It is unclean, but I seem to see a lot of folks working them.

This is ridiculous, most Israelis are secular and quite a few of them eat pork. In fact, there are pork farms in Israel. Only orthodox and conservative jews avoid pork.
This Israeli official should have done his research before looking like an idiot in front of the entire world.
I've already heard rumours that the US gov't has the vaccine for the swine flu, because they created the swine flu! Allegedly it was a form of bio warfare

"Jesus flu" would work just as well because it only offends Christians.
I see I'm not the only one who figured the swine flu would be a great psychological weapon against the muslim enemy. It would be great fun to stealthily spread it some of the most radical muslims and see the swine flu spread throughout the muslim world. I'm surprised a Jew would be THAT sensitive over the name of a disease. I've heard they avoid eating pork (which apparently goes back to a Jewish leader deciding that certain animals whose meat could spread diseases they carried were not kosher), but nothing like the muslim belief that if they were contaminated by a pig they could never get into heaven.
Slightly off-topic, I remember from about 20 years ago there was someone in a game who went by the handle of "Harley Hog" who jokingly talked about giving his competitors a case of swine flu. When I saw a photo of him at a meet, where I saw a big guy with dark sunglasses, a long red beard, and wearing a black leather studded jacket, I knew who it had to be.
