Must not advocate use of Rhino horn -- even in jest

Use of Rhino horn as an aphrodisiac is superstitious nonsense but there is unfortunately a lot of superstition in the Far East and it does lead to the illicit slaughter of Rhinos for their horns.

Belief in the Holy Trinity is pretty nonsensical too so Westerners cannot afford to be too critical.
"Elle Macpherson says she regrets any distress she may caused by jokingly advocating the use of powdered rhino horn, a traditional Chinese medicine that is banned worldwide.

During a recent interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, the Australian model said that she had tasted rhino horn and that it had "done the job".

Her comments were condemned by animal rights activists, more so because Macpherson had publicly boycotted a posh London restaurant for serving bluefin tuna, an animal that is as endangered as the white rhino.

However, the model told news.com.au today that she had "never knowingly consumed or encouraged the use or consumption of any products which contain material derived from endangered species".

There is a bit of sleight of hand above. It is true that the white (more properly "weit") Rhino is endangered but other Rhinos are not.

Yeah what is up with the Holy Trinity attack, usually your good about disagreeing with Christianity (an all thesism) but still respectful to it.

Holy Trinity - One God with multiple personality disorder. It's Holy because the concept is full of holes. Anyone got a better explanation?

We must remember that Jon is an atheist, which i assume is the reason for the inappropriate and rather dumb Holy Trinity crack? And it's not Westerners who believe in the Holy Trinity, but Christians. Where they the real target Jon? Not like you at all.

BTW, "all" Rinos are endangered.

It's muslims who think any criticism or satire is "an attack". This site is supposed to champion "free speech", so why shouldn't Jon or anyone ridicule a ridiculous concept as the holy trinity (which is linked to pagan magical "threes").

Okay... gotta chime in here. As a previous poster mentioned, Jon is a atheist. Being a Christian, I believe he is (very sadly) wrong. But let's not suddenly take offense (like followers of some *other* religion might) simply because he chooses to disagree with us. At its core, this site is about free speech. We (the readers collectively) rail against those that are quick to take offense and try to silence dissent. Let's not become one of them. While I'm saddened by his lack of belief in God, I'm not "offended." The God I believe in has given people free will. As a follower of Christ, it's not my place to put a gun (or IED) to anybody's head to force them to "believe." If you think I'm stupid for believing a certain way, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. Just as I'm entitled to my opinion that I'm right and you're wrong. When we cry foul when people express their opinion about something we might hold dear, we have become the enemy.

With all that said, I think his comparison with Christianity was unnecessary and a bit mean-spirited. But I can't in good conscience say, "Free speech for me but not for thee." I'll leave that to the Left.

For the record... what does bother me is when folks throw opinion around as fact. Comments such as Jon's and Anon 9:34 are statments that can't be "proved" any more than can the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Truth is, unless one of us has died and come back, neither of us can prove anything. Neither of us know what lies on the other side. We both are relying on "faith."

I'd hit that! Repeatedly.

Anon 11:13,

If you believe in the doctrine of the holy trinity, you have the burden of proof, not me. So, start 'splaining.

Belief in the Holy Trinity requires no proof. If you want to disprove the Holy Trinity, the burdon of proof is on you, as proof is not a requisite for belief.
If you set up the hypothesis, Null: there is a God, (the commonly accepted status quo) vs. Alternative: there is no God, what evidence would prove the alternative? If you switched the hypotheses, what evidence would then be required?

Anon 11:33,

Actually, I have no burden of proof since I'm not trying to prove anything. I merely stated my belief. But you did speak to my last point which, based on the challenging nature of your comment, I think you missed completely. Which was simply this: I can't "prove" my belief system is true; you can't "prove" your belief system is true. Fact is, we all live on faith of some kind that can't be confirmed this side of death.

Just want to know what this "holy trinity" thing is and how it works.

Is it:
1. One god; three personalities
2. One god family consisting of three entities
3. Three separate and unequal gods
4. One god existing in three parallel universes
5. Smoke and mirrors

At least explain what it is you want me to believe.

Anon 3:11, said "Actually, your comment proves who the true moron is."

So, you finally admit it.

The Holy Trinity isn't mentioned in the Bible, and is just a concept later Christians formulated, but many Christians didn't accept it but were persecuted as heretics by the sect of Christianity that won out.

Jon said, "Belief in the Holy Trinity is pretty nonsensical too"

To all who are offended by Jon's statement:
How does belief in the Holy Trinity make sense?

Anon 2:46

You do realize, I hope, that belief in both sides of the "God/No God" debate requires faith. If you demand "proof" to believe in the presence of God, do you also demand "proof" to believe in the absence of God? No? How convenient.

The Holy Trinity is so clearly an artificial and painfully anthropomorphic view of the godhead - a father, a son, and a nebulous spirit to make it a threesome.
For other "trinities" in culture see "the 3 Graces", "the 3 wise men", "the 3 wise monkeys", "the 3 ugly sisters" "the 3 witches", etc.

Nothing can proved or disproved except in mathematics. Other claims must be justified with reason and logic or compeling evidence. The "Holy Trinity" fails on all counts.

Don't forget the 3 Stooges and Cream (someone once said, Clapton is God).

Guys, why all this discusssion on one small comment?

Elle is HOT!

Jesus says he who denies me in this life he will deny before the Father...denying the Trinity is denying the Christian Faith. There is a trinity for all you going to hell blasphemors.

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, the usual threats of eternal damnation from "loving christians"!

"denying the Trinity is denying the Christian Faith. "

Where is the trinity mentioned in the bible, dickwad?

Another religious "trinity" are the three archangels of catholicism - Gabriel, Michael and Raphael.
