No freedom to name your kids as you wish?

A name is evidence of child abuse? America is a very authoritarian place at times. The child welfare goons below sound like they are imitating Hitler rather than opposing him.
Parents who named two of their children "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation" lost custody of all three of their children Thursday, even though they say a New Jersey appeals court found no evidence of abuse, ruling the children have been taken away without cause

“Actually, the judge and DYFS told us that there was no evidence of abuse and that it was the names. They were taken over the children's names,” Heath Campbell told NBC 10 Tuesday.

However, the appeals court ruled last year that sufficient evidence of abuse or neglect existed because of domestic violence in the home, and removed the children from their Philipsburg, N.J.home.

In protest, Heath and Deborah Campbell picketed with three other people outside of child services offices in Flemington, N.J., Tuesday, saying that the state has no right to keep their children away from them now that the court allegedly ruled that the kids were taken away without cause, NBC 10 reports.

At the time both parents acknowledge the hate behind their children's names. But say that was not their intention. "This is America, they say it's free, you have the right to name your child whatever you want to name your child, no matter what," Heath Campbell said.

Wow. That's a hard one. So these idiots "acknowledge the hate" but gave the kids those names anyway?

Since when is Liberty about doing the most vile, destructive, hateful things you can think of?

It seems as if these "parents" are trying to force the authorities into passing a Stupid Names law. Yet I don't think there's really anyone in their right mind that wants to open that Pandora's box.

It's attitudes like theirs that lead to idiotic warning labels plastered over every available surface. ("Warning: Coffee is hot" Well duh! It's supposed to be hot!)

I disagree 100%. What if Mr. & Mrs. Jones wanted to name their son Jesus Redeemer Jones? Would That be permissible? Muslims and Jews might take issue to that. Or what if Wiccan parents named their daughter Goddess Smith? Fundamental Christians may take issue.

You can't please everyone, and that's the point of the Constitution. People have the right to express their opinions, and we as citizens must grant them that right. Just as they must permit us to express our disagreement. Anything less undermines the intent and letter of the Constitution.

Oh, and it's not their attitudes that lead to such pathetic legislation, it's the knee-jerk reaction of the Left and the PC crowd that leads to such laws.

Parents said, "This is America, they say it's free..."

These fools actually believe this is a free country. I wonder how many other fools out there still believe that.

I personally know people who have named their kids "Che", "Mao", and "Carl" after Socialist icons who were just as evil as old Adolph.

Hollywood types name their kids things like "Moxie Crimefighter" and "Zuma Nesta Rock"

I've always felt there should be some kind of limit on what kind of names parents could saddle their kids with, but the realist in me knows that the moment we ban names like "Hitler", the people in charge of enforcing name laws will quickly ban "Peter", "Paul", and "Mary" for their links to Christianity.

What if Mr. & Mrs. Jones wanted to name their son Jesus Redeemer Jones?

As your example shows, even trying to come up with some sort of reasonable Stupid Names law would be essentially impossible. (Though I should point out that Jesus [especially when pronounced Hay-soos] is not an uncommon name.) Attempting to define what names would be good vs. bad is a kind of Sorites paradox problem. That's why I think no one wants to even try it. Besides, who really wants to think it's necessary to tell others how do something which should be a no-brainer, like giving a child a decent name? I sure don't.

On the other hand, do you see the likely trouble with the moniker these two "parents" have hung around their childrens' necks? There is a difference between giving names that are odd, or which someone could choose to take offense at (this happens on elementary school playgrounds all the time), and being deliberately provocative—attempting to pick a fight, or at least poke someone in the ear.

All I'm saying is that deliberately attempting to offend people as these two "geniuses" have, is what leads to a backlash and stupid laws.

I also feel really sorry for the children. They are suffering for their parents' lack of common sense.

Interestingly enough, my tour guide in Iceland told me that it is the law there that parents have to take their names from a set of approved Icelandic names, and that it has to be approved by the church when the child is baptised. It is all about preserving Icelandic culture.
Mind you, I am not advocating it here - but considering some of the stupid names some poor kids are lumbered with, I can see the point.

Parents like these are the reason courts provide a way to change your legal name. It's a form of tyranny though for the government to abuse it's power to take kids away from their parent just because they don't like the names the children were given.

Stupid - sure
Abuse - no, HOWEVER, apparently there was evidence of other abuse.
If this is only about the names I have no doubt that it is a media beat-up and the children will soon be returned.
If it is about something else, too bad.
