‘Ex-Gay’ Flyer Stirs Controversy at Maryland High School

We read:
"A flyer sent home with some Maryland high school students sparked controversy this week because of its message to teenagers that no one is “born gay.”

The one-page flyer, from a group called “Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays,” was distributed to students at Albert Einstein High School in Montgomery County, Md. and claimed that each year, “thousands of people with unwanted same-sex attractions make the personal decision to leave a gay identity,”

According to WTTG, the letter was sent home in compliance with the school board’s policy on flyer distribution, which says that if a group can prove it is a nonprofit organization, it can distribute flyers to students four times a year.

Karen Yount-Merrell, a clinical social worker, told WTTG she was disturbed when one of the flyers came home with her son. “I don’t like it,” she told the station. “Everything in this flyer make its sound like the goal is to be [an] ex-gay, [or an ex]-lesbian. It is not embracing of a different orientation. It reiterates a societal view that there‘s something ’wrong‘ with you if you’re not in the norm. If you aren’t heterosexual.”

Good to see that she knows what the societal view is.

So on her view, because you're born helpless, with an inability to walk, speak, or do anything other than eat and defecate, you should embrace that state rather than striving to grow?

That's really weird, that given I live in the DC area, that this hasn't been in the news. Normally stories like this would be huge as the area is full of liberals and they would shriek in rage if this were done.

Has anyone ever scientifically documented whether one is born gay, or becomes/chooses to be gay?

No, there hasn't been any sort of documentation. The human brain is such a complex and baffling object, it may take decades of scientific advancement before we even minutely advance our understanding of its workings.

I have no evidence, but my sneaking suspicion is that it is inborn, possibly with a little bit of choice in some people.

Anon 1:50am, I also live in the DC area, and I saw this on WTTG Fox 5 during one of their 5pm newscasts. I am surprised the other DC area stations and the Post have not yet picked up this story and run with it. My favorite part is 'It reiterates a societal view that there‘s something ’wrong‘ with you if you’re not in the norm.' Now call me crazy but isn't the definition of 'abnormal' 'not in the norm.'?

Also in the superbowl last night they had two liberal mayors of liberal cities speak out against the teh second amendment, while claiming they weren't. It was pathetic beyond belief.

Anon 1:44,... don't be fooled by NYC's queen, oops, i mean, mayor Bloomberg. When it comes to guns, he is "far to the left" of the Brady campaign. His goal is an outright ban on "all" firearms. That he is a mega-Billionaire makes his all the more dangerous.

Also, our limp-wristed ruler is a Fascist who believes you can't live properly unless you live as he says you must.

So let me get this straight...

According to accepted science, a person is born with the genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Society-at-large determines that alcoholism is wrong, so groups are set up for people to combat their alcoholism. That is considered acceptable.

According to accepted science, a person is born with the genetic disposition violent behavior. Society-at-large determines that uncontrolled violence is wrong, so accommodations are made to provide medical and social assistance to help the individual combat his violent tendencies. That is considered acceptable.

According to yet-to-be confirmed and accepted science, a person is born with the genetic predisposition to be gay, and society-at-large determines that being gay is wrong, Organizations and groups promote ways for the person to combat his gayness. That is considered completely unacceptable, insensitive, and hate-ridden.

Look up "F*cking hypocrites" in the dictionary, and its entry says, "See Liberal".

What I find most troubling is that the school allows outside parties to send propaganda home with the students. I wonder of NAMBLA can get in on that action?

Sig, you can eff what society thinks. There is a difference between being an alcoholic or violent offender and being gay. Being an alcololic is unhealthy and potentially dangerous to other people, and being violent is obviously dangerous to other people. Being gay is just unacceptable to some people because it is against their mystical religious beliefs, while in truth, it is not inherently dangerous to anybody. And I tend to believe people are born that way, but many others do make it a lifestyle choice, or have it forced upon them.
