Woman told she could not hand out free bottled water in summer heat

Just the usual Leftist hate of Christians

The City of Phoenix could face a lawsuit if the city doesn’t apologize to a Valley woman for telling her she could not hand out free bottled water to people in the summer heat.  Dana Crow-Smith said a City of Phoenix worker came up to her during the First Friday festival in downtown Phoenix last month and told her she was violating city code by handing out free water because she did not have a permit.

Crow-Smith and a group of others were there exercising their Christian beliefs by engaging people to talk about religion if they wanted.

The group brought several cases of bottled water to give away in the 112-degree heat, but said a Neighborhood Preservation Inspector told the group they had to stop handing out the water or would be cited.

“It was really hot and yeah we wanted to show God's love and a small act of kindness is a great way to do that without shoving it down someone's throat,” said Crow-Smith.

The Rutherford Institute , a non-profit civil liberties organization, stepped in to represent Crow-Smith and calls this is “a violation of Crow-Smith's First Amendment right to freely exercise her religion, her Fourteenth Amendment due process rights, as well as Arizona's Free Exercise of Religion Act.”

In a letter to the city , Whitehead demanded the City issue a formal, written apology to Crow-Smith, assure her no City officials will interfere in future with her distribution of water, and require City workers go through training on the proper enforcement of the City’s code.  If not, a lawsuit could follow.

Neighborhood Preservation Inspector? Didn't we first see them in 1939 Berlin?

Ever notice how the weaker and more gullible the people get, the more outrageous and aggressive the govt. gets?

More like 1932.

Oh come on! It's just another case of devious disingenuous so-called Christians using the ruse of helping people, where the food, or water in this case, is merely bait - to get an audience for their proselytizing. They have to say that is only if the recipients of their cheap water scam wish to hear their spiel, but it won't be the recipients who bring up the subject of religion in the first place and they will be all but harassed about it.

If you are not paying for the product, then you are the product. If you don't want to hear their pov, then don't accept the free water.

What exactly is a Neighbourhood Preservation Inspector?
Was this a case of differential treatment where other water-hander-outers were allowed but the religious ones were banned?
Or were all water-hander-outers banned?

so if someone was dying of thirst you'd need a permit first before saving them? lol, government sure is efficient eh?

3;12 AM Did you notice the words "if they wanted" after ". . . engaging people to talk about religion . . ."?

Nobody was forced to listen to a sermon. Nor were they forced to take the water.

Neighborhood Preservation Inspector? That sounds ominous.

2:47 AM - you evidently didn't read very closely what 3:12 actually typed!

It's obviously time to resurrect the Knights Templar. We could give them $50. for the head of every atheist they convert, into ashes. It's time we rid our society of the leftist vermin. Besides, look at all the jobs that would be created.

And Anon 2:13, your sarcasm may become a reality sooner than you think.

I've lived in Phoenix for 22 years now... It was always my understanding that it is ILLEGAL in Arizona to deny a thirsty person a drink of water. Now these morons want to make it illegal to GIVE a thirsty person a drink?!
What the hell happened?

Hey, Anonymous 3:18
I think the Knights Templar were originally a fine organization who were totally screwed just so the king of France could default on a loan.
I am a libertarian atheist... I believe that what a person does with his/her own body/soul in his/her own space is his/her own damn business.
I have no problem with crosses or other religious markers on public property, as long as there is no compulsion for me to bow down before them.
If I were thirsty (as Phoenix outdoor festivals in the summer tend to make me) I'd listen to a few minutes of "Jesus loves me" for a sip of water.
(As long as I don't have to eat the cookie)

3:18 - In the East, the Far East, when a person is sentenced to death, they're sent to a place where they can't escape, never knowing when an executioner may step up behind them, and fire a bullet into the back of their head. It's been a pleasure talking to you.
