Atheists Convince TN University to Ban Prayer Before Football Games‏

Prayer at public school football games has been a frequent target of atheist activist groups, particularly when it comes to high schools and colleges in Tennessee. Last September, high school football coaches in Westmoreland found themselves in hot water for bowing their heads during student-led prayers. And now, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has taken the extraordinary step of banning prayers before games.

The prayer complaint sent to school officials in Chattanooga came from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The organization says a local person complained in May about prayer at games.

The school’s chancellor, Roger Brown, announced this week that the university will now issue a moment of silence rather than a spoken prayer before each game. The decision comes after the FFRF complaint and after the university’s Secular Student Alliance (SSA), an atheist student group, protested the previous prayer practices.

From an atheist viewpoint, prayer is talking to yourself.  So why is that offensive?  This is just anti-Christian Leftist activism, nothing more.

And what has become of the guaranteed "free exercise" of religion?

That applies to individuals, not the collective. People are still free to perform their own, hopefully silent, prayers before, during, and after the game. Whether it's public prayers, moments of silence, or singing the national anthem, it's all a stupid waste of time (at a football game).

A lot of athiest are assholes - just as bad as christian and muslim fanatics. Some athiests refuse to believe that there is a possibility a god exists, just as some belivers refuse to believe that there is a possibility that a god doesn't exist. These fanatical athiests, a very very small percentage of athiests, most of them liberal demonkats I'm sure, just need to STFU!

You had a rational argument until the above statement.

2:38 - I very much agree with your points. As usual "opinion groups" want dominance over each other, and not prepared to compromize in a civil way. Hopefully it never gets to the rioting-mulim level of trying to get one's way.

Ever notice how the Freedom From Religion Foundation always manages to find that one protestor in every location they go to? Hmm... I wonder if their targets ever spend any time looking into whether that "protestor" is real, or just an excuse the atheists use to force their views on everyone. And, why is it always Christians they target?

Atheists do make us realize one thing, that our generally misguided tolerance of their policy of intimidation is just that, highly misguided.

Message to Christians: Turning the other cheek doesn't work. It's time to start hitting back!

You do realize that the 2nd amendment is enjoyed by atheists too?

The Christians in this story were not forcing their views on anyone, but it seems the atheists forced their view on everyone.

I'm an athiest. So you wanna kill me, eh? Well, you self-appointed Christian soldiers, be aware that I'm armed too. And when you stop to pray, I'll do my best to make it possible for you to meet your God and explain your actions in person (have fun in Hell).

And that goes for your Muslim rage boys too.

A moment of silence is more appropriate. Although this doesn’t prevent a student or such from praying aloud, to prevent him from doing so would be a costly civil rights lawsuit. Most activist atheists are merely anti-Christian bigots, most arguably demonstrated by their sole focus on a philosophy that purports to turn the other cheek. Persecution is also a bygone staple done to Christians. Defy it through civil disobedience and pray anyway. I do wait for the day the atheists attempt to challenge the Islamic faith, but I won’t hold my breath, because most atheists are also cowards who prey on the pious prayful.

Here's what Jesus did when struck:

When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”
— John 18:22–23

The Greek word used for "struck" indicates an open handed strike.

Hitting prisoners was against Jewish law.

Notice that Jesus didn't physically strike back, but he did address the official's hypocrisy directly. Turning the other cheek does not mean being a milquetoast, it means being the one to let tolerable provocations go so that real peace might be accomplished.

Definition of a wimp - one to let tolerable provocations go so that real peace might be accomplished.

Anon 11:55 A moment of silence is more appropriate

Agreed, even Atheists can use a moment of silence to center their minds to the upcoming activity and frankly public prayer is usually just a short sermon for public consumption and not what I as a practicing Christian would consider a proper prayer anyway.

"Here's what Jesus did when struck:"

Why didn't Jesus use his superhuman powers to smite them, just like his dad did quite often?
