Banning adverts for “junk food” is censorship

"On Sunday, UK campaign group Action on Sugar (AoS) published its Childhood Obesity Action Plan. As puffed up as, well, a sugar puff, AoS declared that the plan had been requested by the secretary of state for health, Jeremy Hunt. The seven action points in the plan aim to tackle the 'food environment,' which is, apparently, entirely responsible for obesity.

Implementing the plan will require the government to provide 'strong leadership to bring about a sea-change in the philosophy of the whole soft-drink and food industry.'

There is plenty to criticise in the AoS plan, which is stuffed full of ideas for lifestyle interference on the word of self-appointed experts. But one idea stands out: 'a total ban on advertising of ultra-processed foods that are high in saturated fats, sugar and salt, and sweetened soft drinks, to protect children.'"

"The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement. They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent. They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office."

Economist Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973)

To paraphrase: First they came for the soda drinker but I don't drink soda so I didn't care; then they came for the fast food eaters but I don't eat fast food very often so I didn't care; then they came for... fill in you own favorite items. It won't end with children, these social do-gooders want to run everything about everyone's life.

What we really need is a ban on pronouncements by "health experts". The current epidemic in obesity and diabetes here in the U.S. is a direct result of the "low fat" diet urged upon the American public. The animal fats that people had been eating for millennia were replaced by oils created by food processors. Most of our foods now contain large amounts of carbs (mostly sugar) to replace the fats.

Oh yes, and obesity has nothing to do with the huge and over-frequent portions of meals and snacks that Americans typically indulge in that makes the US a laughing-stock across the World (albeit that other countries are now imitating the American example because of globalized culture and commerce).

If people want to have a healthy lifestyle, they need to find what works best for them as an individual. Over the counter fad diets do not cut it. Neither do "experts" like Dr. Oz. Well rounded food intake and moderate exercise does it. I lost 25 pounds in 3 months without major changes. Just insure that calories in < calories out. If this makes me a "health freak", so be it.
